The Willoughbys by Lois Lowry is a hilarious parody of “old-fashioned” children’s stories in which the Willoughby siblings have some very tongue in cheek adventures. Iowa has four awards for children’s books sponsored by the Iowa Association for School Librarians. The awards are the Iowa Children’s Choice Award, the Goldfinch award, the Iowa Teen Award and the Iowa High School Book Award. I chose this week’s books from the Goldfinch Award List and the Iowa Children’s Choice Award list because they fit the criteria of the class.
The Goldfinch Award was created during the 2007-2008 school year. It started out with a discussion for the need for a state wide award for younger children similar to other Iowa awards. The Goldfinch award is awarded to authors by PreK to 3rd grade students in the state of Iowa. Books are nominated by students and a committee reviews the nominations to create a finals list. Over the next year, students must have read at least five books on the list in order to vote for their favorite. The Iowa Children’s Choice Award is given to author’s by 3rd-6th grade Iowa students.
